چکیده

[1] The hydrology and geochemistry of groundwater in tropical island aquifers, such as on Barbados, are significantly influenced by tropical climatic conditions. Recharge to these aquifers is the product of regional and local climate patterns that control rainfall. Oxygen isotopes can be used to estimate the amount and timing of recharge on these islands because seasonal fluctuations of rainwater oxygen isotopic compositions are related to the amount of rainfall. This study shows that estimates of average annual recharge to the limestone aquifer on Barbados vary widely, displaying a more direct relationship to the distribution of rainfall throughout each year than to total annual rainfall. Recharge estimates are higher during years when rainfall is concentrated in the peak wet season months than during years when rainfall is more evenly distributed throughout the year. The El Niño-Southern Oscillation appears to be partially responsible for these rainfall and recharge fluctuations. Knowledge of interannual variation of recharge and processes responsible is important because recharge variation must be considered when setting groundwater management policies related to groundwater availability.

Quantification of Groundwater Recharge from an Ephemeral Stream into a Mountainous Karst Aquifer

Sustainable groundwater production from karst aquifers is primarily dictated by its recharge rate. Therefore, it is essential to accurately quantify annual groundwater recharge in order to limit overexploitation and to evaluate artificial methods for groundwater enrichment. Infiltration during erratic flood events in karst basins may substantially contribute to aquifer recharge. However, the co...

Groundwater recharge simulation using a coupled saturated-unsaturated flow model

Abstract The coupled MODFLOW-HYDRUS software package was used to produce a saturated-unsaturated flow model for a Flood Spreading System (FSS) and its associated aquifer. The study aim to improve simulations of near-surface hydrological processes, including temporal and spatial variation in groundwater recharge rates. The coupled model was built with average RMSE=1.1 and 1.3 for calibration ...

VADOCHARGE: Groundwater Recharge Model for an Uplifted Island Karst Aquifer, Guam, USA

The Northern Guam Lens Aquifer (NGLA) presents unique challenges to modelers due to the complex hydrologic properties of its thick karst vadose zone. To meet these challenges, we developed VADOCHARGE, an analogue model based on the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation (SSARR) model, to produce the effect of attenuated and lagged recharge through the vadose z...

Effects of Antecedent Hydrogeologic Conditions on Flood Magnitude and Recharge to the Floridan Aquifer in North- Central Florida

Water is one of our most important resources. Both surface water and groundwater are used by humans for drinking, irrigation, transportation, entertainment, and are a major service for ecosystems. Almost all surface water features, such as streams, rivers, and lakes, interact with groundwater by exchanging water between these two reservoirs. Surface water can become polluted depending on land u...
